Antitrust regulators in the European Union have launched a full-scale probe into Boeing’s (BA) proposal to take a controlling stake in Embraer’s (ERJ) commercial aircraft business, as they say the transaction may reduce competition and increase prices, Reuters reported on Friday.

The European Commission claims that the deal will remove Embraer from the commercial aircraft sector, and potential rivals from China, Japan, and Russia will be unable to fill the void over the next decade because of the steep barriers to enter the industry, according to the report.

The European Commission has set a deadline of Feb. 20 for its decision. Reuters was the first to report on an incoming EU investigation, which was confirmed by Embraer.
